RE: Voodoo 5 only running in a single chip mode

Hello,
We do
not have a registry key file such as you describe, but we have seen
this
issue to be remedied by the following suggestions:
1.
Check the MSIEXEC.EXE file...needs to be Version 1.1
2. On
the Voodoo5 5500 CD in the Win9x directory is the file instmsia.exe
(this file
is also in all new driver builds for the Voodoo3 from V1.05.00
and up)
which when run will install the Windows Installer 1.1. (instmsiw.exe
is the
NT 4 version).
3. You
can also get the Windows Installer 1.1 Redistribution file from
Microsoft,
http://msdn.microsoft.com/downloads/sdks/platform/wininst.asp.
4. Run
the Setup.exe in the Win9x directory to install the 3dfx Tools,
ensuring
again that no background applications are running during the
install.
5.
Microsoft specifies that their new installer requires IE 4.01 to be
installed,
probably with SP1 for IE 4.01 +. All of the required files can be
downloaded
from the Microsoft site: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads and
search
for the product and OS.
***You
can also try renaming this directory:
C:\Program
Files\Common Files\InstallShield
TO:
C:\Program
Files\Common Files\InstallShieldOLD
And
then attempt the install again.
I went directly to the Last resort solution and this
restored 3DfxTools and all the features and functions !! I added the LOD patch
and the voodoo5 5500 is set to 2x FSAA at 166mhz
***Last
Resort Solution:
-
Install DirectX 7.0a from CD
-
Reboot
-
Rename C:\Program Files to C:\Blah
- Install
3dfx Tools (NOTE: The installation program will create a NEW
C:\Program
Files with two new directories.)
- Copy
C:\Program Files\3dfx Interactive\*.* to C:\Blah
-
Delete C:\Program Files (the NEWLY created directory!)
-
Rename C:\Blah to C:\Program Files
-
Reboot
Thanks!

Alf 3dfx Interactive, Inc. says......
" or the
result of massive registry problems............ " go with this one !
Hello,
I had
my v5500 agp working just fine with windows98se. with all the 3dfx
Tools
menus appearing in the Display settings
advanced tabbed menus. Along
with
the control panel applet 3dfxTools {all
the checkboxes marked}. THEN
I
installed Windows98me which by the way
came up and across just fine with
the
3dfxTools and menu tabs in
....advanced. FSAA 2x in D3D and Glide
and
other
tweaks {nothing overclocked} 166mhz.
P3-500 384meg pc-100. This
lasted
for about three days - the 'me' os just
blew up and I couldn't get
anything
past 'safe mode'. I tried removing the
v5500 and going to just vga
and no
luck -safe mode only. I tried reinstalling
the v5500 {cd/both
versions
of drivers on the internet v5-w9x-all-1.00.01.exe and
v5-w9x-all-1.01.00.exe. well the may drivers would load and detect
the
v5500
driver, but would just stall after the installshield started {nothing
further
nada - zip point squat!} the temp folder had the "reg key string
numbers
- a couple of ~temp folders with install info and setup and msi
something
loaded in the <ctrl+alt+del> task list,
after that the 3dfx
control
panel applet was empty of everything including
the text. The
overclock
tab menu was empty there was no glide tab.
The windows98me just
really
started going downhill - AND picking irq3 for the v5500 when the asus
mainboard
was using irq11 like it always had - so I reinstalled
Windows98se
- after first erasing everything from c:\windows and then
removing
(rd) the windows folder. SO now my
registry is at 6 meg down from
10meg+
since I had this OS clear from Windows 3.11 then Windows 95 / 98 /
and
finally 98se - but misktake 1 was going
to windows98me {i liked the
idea of
restore points} then back to Windows 98se... right now. I think the
v5500
is okay - I can play 1024x768x32 games and the graphics looks as good
as is
as fast as before with FSAA 2x. I do
have one of those slot mounted
coolers
blowing right on the v5500 {kept my voodoo3 3500tv cool to}.
on to
the point.. I still can't make the
3dfxTools install as before, and
if I check the registry I see nothing that
looks like the 3dfx registry
keys
before I installed windows98me. {if i
had the proper hindsite i would
of
extracted those keys then} I can't get the mcafee to install either and
it uses
the same msi stuff with installshield.
What I think I require - is
a
zipped file with all the v5500 reg keys inside, so I can MANUALLY install
the
keys correctly and I just bet you the 3dfxTools will install correctly
and
everything "clears up with this v5500" Windows98me could of
"jammed
up"
the registers in the v5500 big time, and I need to do a reset of sorts.
I hate to
go into a game not knowing exactly what my v5500 settings are -
even
though I am quickly put at rest when everything looks as good as it did
before....
how on
this ?
cheers,
dracman
