With the newest DX7a release of the 3Dfx drivers Tomb Raider 1/Gold will now start working again for the Voodoo3's {2000, 3000, and 3500} {agp also}.
Let me know if you upgrade your drivers and Tomb Raider doesn't work !
The Rush Tomb.exe and 3Dfx Tombub.exe both work now with "Mip Mapping" turned on 8^)

**note: in case you are wondering what happened to the glide2x.ovl that usually
accompanies the glide2x.dll well, it looks like it doesn't get installed

Subject: TR1 and Banshee
Date: Thursday, October 07, 1999 5:36 PM
Following my last message to you, I owe it to make you aware that I have
got the Banshee card working again on the TR1 Rush patch (854 kb). After
a lot of file browsing and reading I found a tip on that SCSI equipment
not were desireable when running the above mentioned game. I disabled my
SCSI controller, and the rush patch started TR1. So I started using tomb3dfx.bat and unfinish.bat to start the games with. They work fine,
but the screenrefresh settings in the batch files have no effect, my
monitor runs these programs at 60 hz no matter the setting. The
resolution also seem to be unaffected by these batch files. It seems to
me that the game runs at 800x600@60hz, and I would like to run them at
1024x768@85hz. I have tried to fill in these figures at the bottom of
tomb3dfx.bat and unfinish.bat, but it has no effect. Any ideas to fix
this?
Thank you in advance.

Hello Dracman,
Tomb Raider has worked all along since the very beginning after I used the
Voodoo Rush Patch and your first batch file.
But because the contrast and gamma settings on my monitor were faulty
I was not able to see at all in the darker area.
I could hear Lara's footsteps in the game but it was much too dark to
play. I have tried all the batch files you sent me, with all the different
configurations and they all worked except for the Voodoo3 batch files which
kicks me back to desktop.
Tonight,I tried a few things and discovered that all my old Tomb Raiders
savegames don't work anymore. I can reload all my old Unfinished business
savegames, they all work well but not the Tomb Raider's one.
So, I started a new game and saved it. I tried to reload it and it worked fine.
I tried again to reload the old games but I get kicked back to windows.
I can hear the background sounds but there is no minimized window on the
taskbar I can maximize to get back to the game.
I have to restart a batchfile and exit normally through the passport to stop
the background sounds. Well, at least it works when I start a new game,
so I guess I will have to play the whole game again. ;o)
< dracman >
> what are you running now with Tomb Raider ? The newest Banshee

< Karmina >
I just updated my Banshee drivers with the latest vbw9x-dx7-10304 which have the
new ICD for Open GL
< dracman >
> can you see the 3Dfx ? are you using the Tomb.exe for 3Dfx ?
< Karmina >
No, I can't see the 3dfx logo anymore when I start a Tomb Raider or TRUB
game. I'm not sure when it disappeared though. I know I'm playing in 3dfx
because the graphics are so beautiful compared to the software version.
Also the choice of mipmaping is only available in the 3dfx version.
I am using the Tomb.exe from the Voodoo Rush patch. The others don't work.
So, that's it.
When you get home in December, would you please send me some
of your Tomb Raider savegames to try and see if they work on my computer.

Dracman,
Thanks for the suggestion. I did try your voodoo3 batch file, but for
whatever reason the gamma settings didn’t have an effect. Since then, I've
updated the V3 drivers, and all I get now is a black screen at the TR
startup menu (3dfx did mention a loss of DOS compatibility, but I wanted to
try the Quake 3 test). Fortunately I finished most of the game before I
upgraded from my old Voodoo Graphics card. As blocky as software-mode is,
it’s still acceptable to me, especially when I'm distracted with a puzzle.
(It could be worse, have you seen it on a PlayStation?)
3D hardware is a lot more common than it used to be, so Core should
continue support. But as long as it’s selling, I guess they’ve got bigger
fish to fry. Was it you that said "All Hallows" is a short, extra level
because they couldn’t finish it before their deadline? I guess they’ve got
the same pressure with TR-4 .
I’m glad you keep plugging for D3D, and I think it will help if the movie
gets made. Then their merchandising efforts might finally force them to do
it.
Jon
PS, Just curious, where have you seen cheapest price for a Voodoo 2?

If you follow the link you can see the reply for yourself or it is pasted
here below......
***********************************************************
Is it possible to have Tomb Raider 1 with 3D Acceleration on a Riva TNT card
using a glide wrapper? I have tried and failed.
-Jason Michael Evans
Jason, no it is not possible to run the DOS version of Tomb Raider on a TNT
videocard with the use of a glide wrapper accelerated because DOS programs
cannot use Windows DLL files and the 3D API's that the wrappers use are
Windows native only. Both Direct3D and OpenGL will only work in a Windows
environment. So unless a Windows version of Tomb Raider is released, don't
expect to play it accelerated anytime soon.

I know you don't need proof but I supplied the link all the same.
Bollocks. I guess I will have to find a cheap 'n' nasty Voodoo card.
I did promise to get back to you.
Sorry it wasn't good news though.
Take care.

Subject: Tombraider with glide wrapper
Hello Michael,
xglide 1.4 is for emulating Nintendo 64 on a PC.
I assume you just wish to emulate Glide (3Dfx) with your ATI Rage Pro.
so xglide anything is not the way to go.
I've attached a Glide wrapper that contains instructions for use in the zip file.
Download OpenGlide005a.zip
http://www.guru3d.com/CLGlide/index.htm
I retreived it from the Glide Underground.
http://www.glideunderground.com/GU_Articles.asp
in this case you would put the glide2x.dll in your c:\windows\system AND the Tombraid folder.
or you can try this method: Use any Windows OpenGL compliant video card with Tomb Raider 1/Gold & Unfinished Business
Let me know if this works out for you !
Hope this helps,
dracman

Subject: Thanks for Glide Wrapper Stuff!
Hi Dracman!
Thanks a lot for the Glide Wrapper and info. It's great!
It was really simple to set up and (once I had figured out
to press F1 to change the screen resolution and stuff) works excellently.
I think it's marginally slower (maybe a bit chunkier) than the dodgy
ATI patch that I was using but that doesn't really matter to me.
The only problem is that the saved games from the ATI patch don't work with the 3dfx patch.
I suspect that there's no way round this so I'm currently in a dilemma about whether
to start again from the beginning with sound and joypad working or
to continue from where I had got to (the Cistern level) with the
stupid keyboard setup and the sound switching itself on and off as it feels like it!
Anyway, I'm really grateful that you took the time to help me out. Thanks again!
Michael
