Tomb Raider 1 - Shadow of the Cat - Unfinished Business

High quality graphics for the original Tombraider, including the
"Temple of the cat" and "Unfinished Business" levels

I've just released new versions of Glidos and VDos32.

The main difference is improved support for Tomb Rainder I on 32bit Vista. The FMVs now play full screen and the background music doesn't continue through the FMVs.

Also VDos32 now supports Descent II.

64bit Vista still isn't supported.

Historical Progress of Glidos reads below:
[glidos] New version of VDos32

Paul has just released v0.5 of VDos32 ( for Microsoft's Windows Vista)
General improvements, including better cooperation with Windows,
so that it's safe now to press F1-F4 when running TR1, without it locking up.
Now supports Redguard, in Glide mode at least.
Some possibility that it now works under 64bit Vista, but that's a bit of a long shot.

Hi, Paul Just released a new version of Glidos (XP), version 1.36

New features:
Widescreen mode for laptops (only in Direct3D mode)
Made Direct3D mode display in 24bit colour (16bit is still an option)
Fallback to 16bit depth buffer for cards that disallow 24bit depth

Glidos, version 1.35

The changes affect only people who are trying to run TR1 at the very highest quality,
using the TRX textures, and using high resolutions with antialiasing enabled.
There were cases where these settings
were running 128MB grapics cards out of memory, which led to missing textures in the game.
Glidos now has a setting to use "Managed textures" when in Direct3D mode,
which gets around the problem.

Glidos v1.33 :

Per-palette texture cache to speed up Blood on modern cards.

Avoid reaquiring of LFB when not changed. Makes TR1 ring
menu 6 times faster.

Restructure texture-override mapping-file reading routines,
and add equivalence-file feature that lessens the work
of creating texture packs by automatically mapping
textures reused from one level to the next.

Supply both OpenGLide (OpenGL) and psVoodoo (Direct3D) wrappers
with GLidos, and allow choice between them via the game
configuration.

Extend configuration dialog to cover all options, so that
editing of glidos.ini is no longer necessary.

Have server request game config during game start up, rather
than sending config when the Start button is pressed. This
ensures the game congif is used even if the game is started
directly by double-clicking the DOS program.

Have Glidos send config information to the wrapper, to control
windowed/full screen mode, mipmapping, and per-palette texture
cache.

Tidy up window creation code, moving it into the server class.

Pass on grLFBUnlock calls. Should help if trying to drive
a real voodoo card.

Handle pngs with 1 and 2 components.

Correct handling of Delta0 modes when psVoodoo in use.

User control of Tomb Raider Hack - now selected for TR1 only
by default (not needed for Unfinished business if psVoodoo
selected).

Support for installation of texture packs in subfolders of
the "Textures" folder, with user selection of which to
apply.

New in v1.31 :     Two things:
He Reestablishes support for Windows 95/98/ME, working more efficiently in the way the DOS side communicates with the Windows side.
Paul Fixed a bug that could cause Descent II to crash or to take minutes over some menu screens.

A load of Nathan McCree's music got left out of the PC port of Tomb Raider,
and worse the Sold Out Software version left out the ambient sounds. I've
just released version 1.29 of Glidos, which can recognise scenes and trigger
audio tracks when they appear. There's also an audio pack that has the
triggers and tracks for the first three levels, and the ambient sounds for
all levels.
Cheers,
    Paul.

New in v1.28 :     as always support for high definition texture packs
v1.28 of Glidos is out. Gets rid of black lines that effect ATI cards and nVidia's
recent drivers. Also cures texture drop out with TNT cards and recent ATI drivers.

Hi,
Between v1.24 and v1.25 I made an experimental change which,
it turns out, make some games run in slow motion. I've fixed it
in v1.28.

   Cheers,
      Paul.

(see Tomb Raider Xtra)

  • Vastly improves the graphic quality from the standard game.
  • Support for high definition texture packs (see Tomb Raider Xtra).
  • Also restores the atmospheric music effects that have until now been missing under Windows 2000 and XP.
  • VESA support, which make up for poor support in some graphics cards.
  • Full mouse support for Descent II.
  • Accurate PIT timing for perfect game speed.
  • Eight other classic games now supported.

download and install DirectX 9.0b

Windows 98 or Windows Millennium Edition (Me) operating system. DirectX 9.0b will not run on Windows 95. The Windows XP operating system includes DirectX 8.1. If you use Windows XP, you still need to install DirectX 9.0b

You can now download Glidos for Windows 2000 and XP from http://www.glidos.net

**   Follow the installation instructions carefully: its a bit tricky on 2000 / XP

Cheers,     Paul.

Glidos v1.22 is now available at http://www.glidos.net

-=-=-=-   Problem with Logo appearing in the first two levels now fixed  -=-=-=-=-
The main feature is that now Descent II is supported. There ar also some enhancements for TR. The slight slowmotion in 2000
and XP should be cured, and the grey lightening is back to the blue-white it should be.
Oh, and you can now install the games where you like (providing you don't mind editing glidos.ini with a text editor     .)

Paul Just uploaded a new version of Glidos (v1.19.1). Paul doesn't think there
is anything new in it for Tombraiders. Paul's fixed a few problems
with Descent II and Redguard, and added support for Carmageddon

Please let me know how you get on (using mailto:group@glidos.net),

including bugs you have reported before if they are still apparent.

Cheers,
    Paul.

Paul,

Great job Paul on v1.3! Full screen at 1024x768, I don't remember TR1ever

looking this beautiful, and it's FAST too!

Gameplay slows down a bit ?

Yeh, v 1.3 slows for me too, on my k6/2-450 with TNT1, but not on my Athlon800 with GF2GTS

Sounds  like a viable way to get Tomb Raider 1 /Gold to run !!
>
> does this work for the UB levels ?  Shadow of the Cat and Unfinished
Business ?

< Paul >
It works with UB, the 3dfx one works, because it uses glide2x.ovl

< dracman>
> I run Tomb Raider 1 /Gold and UB *only* [exclusively] from a DOS window in
Windows 98sr2 - never from a DOS environment, never

< Paul >
Good; Glidos will only work if TR is run in the way you are using it.

< dracman >
> My pages
http://www.smokeypoint.com/3dfx.htm,

> Does your driver/wrapper work with Windows 2000 ? Windows ME ?

< Paul >
It should work with ME, because that is more or less the same as 98, but it
definitely wont work with 2000.  I think it could be made to work
with 2000, provided TR1 and DOS/4g works; I don't know if it does; do you?

< dracman >

< Paul >
Yes definitely.   Oops, I guess I should have asked before putting a link to
your site.  Sorry, I'm not that clued up on netiquette

< Paul >
Yes, that's a great move by nVidea.  Sounds like they care about their
customers - unusual.  I'm not sure how Glidos will compare with native
GF3.  Presumably you are still stuck with 640 x 480 in TR1, but then you
have antialiasing, which may make it look better than Glidos running
at 1280 x 1024.

< dracman >
P.S.   how did you get those screen snaps ?

< Paul >
Glidos shows TR graphics in a window, while TR runs in a DOS box (the DOS
box is best  made as small as possible so it doesn't get in the way).
If the DOS box looses the Windows focus then TR1 stops and the action
freezes, {be sure and click outside the glide server window to stop the action - then press print screen.} and you can hit the "Prnt Scrn" key to capture the picture.

I've almost found a way to hide the DOS box, but hopefully I wont lose the
screen-shot feature.
